FINLAND (SCANDINAVIAN) COSTUME--Made to fit American Girl and Bitty Baby dolls.

They love bright color in Finland! This set can be used for any of the Scandinavian (northern European) countries. We will give you the names of some of the parts of the costume:

Red hat generously trimmed with rick-rack and woven trims (naisenlakki),

Dress also generously trimmed top (hapsut), Skirt with decorative waistband (vyo) and trims at the hemline (hulpa eli helma),

Golden Undershirt has turtleneck and is sleeveless,

Golden tights for warmth.

The different clothing items would traditionally be made of wool, reindeer leather and fur. Ours is mostly a synthetic that won't wrinkle. Women would wear heavy brown clogs, mens' are white. Our Dutch clogs will certainly look great!

Most people have grown up thinking the Dutch people were the only ones who wore wooden shoes. NOT! People did that all over Europe. The animals on the land belonged to the royalty, so most people were almost completely vegetarians (or fish eaters), and there wasn't a lot of leather around to make shoes with. High wooden shoes were great because they kept people's feet dry.
